BoGong Moth Summit

Canberra, Australia, 27-28th February 2025

WELCOME

Welcome to the 2025 Bogong Moth Summit!

The Bogong moth (Bugung, Deberra) is an iconic Australian species, important to many First Nations Peoples, critical to ecosystems along its migratory path and the Australian alps, and threatened with extinction. To secure the Bogong moth we need to understand its distribution and migratory flyways which is a major challenge because their distribution records span the full breadth of Australia, everywhere south of 25° latitude.

The Summit’s primary aims are to inspire people to get involved in Bogong moth conservation and highlight their cultural and ecological importance. The venue is the Australian National University in the Robertson Building.

Day one is a show case of diverse knowledge of the Bogong and examplars of insect conservation via discussion panels, short presentations and a mini workshop.

Day two is an invitation-only workshop that aims to determine barriers to diverse groups getting involved in the projects and how to overcome them. This day is invitation only to keep the group small so discussions can be most effective.

We are also planning a field trip to go and see the Bogongs putting on their spectacular display at dusk on the top of Kunama Namadgi / Mt Kosciuszko over the weekend immediately after the Summit.

We hope you’ll join us!

How to inspire broad participation in helping map the bogong migration.

This day is invitation only to keep the group small so discussions can be most effective.

Weekend, March 1st-2nd, 2025

Field Trip to see the Bogongs on Kunama Namagdi / Mt Kosciuszko

We encourage attendees to organise themselves to take an overnight trip to Charlotte Pass to witness a sunset Bogong moth maelstrom on Australia’s highest peak. We can provide interested people information on accommodation options (Pygmy Possum Lodge and Stilwell Lodge) and can help participants find carpool options. Accommodation at Charlotte Pass, transport, and catering are all at own organisation and expense. The hike from Charlotte Pass to Mt Kosciuszko summit is 19km round trip from Charlotte Pass and we strongly encourage all interested people to research the details of the walk and take all the precautions they need to ensure they do the walk safely.
